Eco-Friendly Boating's Impact on Ecosystems

The impact of recreational boating on aquatic ecosystems is significant. Fish, shellfish, sea birds and other forms of aquatic life require a balance of nutrients, oxygen and clean water to survive. Even small quantities of toxic products in the water can disrupt this balance, with lasting harmful effects. The volume of hydrocarbon and oil pollution entering North America's waters every year from recreational boating is estimated to be more than 15 times the amount of the Exxon Valdez spill (up to one billion litres per year). An estimated 30 percent of all fuel and oil used in two-stroke engines ends up in the water. We can reduce these threats to the ecosystems by careful attention to routine boat maintenance and use.

Hydro-Lance Technology in Luxury Cruise Ships

Hydro-Lance vessels are simple displacement hulls, with the same math calculations used for weight displacement of a rowboat, or a full sized cargo ship. However, because conventional ships require large amounts of freeboard (that distance from the water's surface to the top of the hull) to prevent crashing waves from rolling over the deck (deck-wash), the tonnage of ship displacement often far exceeds the intended use. Conventional vessel design just gets real heavy simply to provide the space demanded for luxury cruise passengers, such as ball rooms, suites, formal dining rooms and swimming pools - all inside a heavily ribbed tub.

Gambia(Africa) River Boat Trips

One of the major rivers in Africa, The Gambia River runs the length of the smallest country in Africa, the Gambia. The river is over 1000 km long with it's source at the Fouta Djallon plateau in Guinea where it meanders west and pours out into the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Banjul in the West African country of The Gambia. Most visitors to The Gambia tend to stick pretty close to the costal resorts, which is a shame considering that there is so much more to The Gambia than just beaches. The best way to travel inland is to take a boat trip up the Gambia river which for about half it's length is navigable.

The Muskrat is a delightful, lively solo canoe that practically lifts itself onto the top of your car for transporting to your favourite launching site. Based on J.H.Rushton's "Wee Lassie" design, she has a straight keel that allows excellent tracking for such a short boat and a round bottom that handles rough water nicely. She carries enough space for your gear for a week or two out in the bush and rests lightly on one shoulder for portages or may be fitted with a removable yoke.

Vetus Bow Thruster - How to Choose, Buy

Having a bow thruster gives you positive control of your boat, even at low speed and regardless of wind, current or tight docking conditions. VETUS offers both electrically and hydraulically driven bow thrusters, to suit a wide variety of boats. Working in close collaboration with the Maritime Institute Netherlands (MARIN), the world-famous hydrodynamic laboratory, VETUS has optimised the performance of its thrusters. This has been achieved by utilising a unique propeller blade profile, which creates little or no cavitation. As cavitation produces unwanted noise, this new blade design offers a major reduction in the operating sound levels for VETUS bow thrusters. Moreover, the application of this new propeller has reduced the current consumption by up to 10%.

Fix Leaking Seams in Aluminum Boats with G/Flex 650 Epoxy

'We wanted to experiment with using G/flex to fix leaking aluminum boats. I was quite surprised to find that every aluminum boat owner I talked to said they had some sort of leak. Within 3 hours, I had several co-workers volunteer their aluminum boats for the experimental fix using G/flex.
Finding the leaks: The first step is to find the leak. This is fairly easy—just fill the inside with water up to the waterline. To reduce the possibility of destruction or distortion, I tilted the boat and only filled one end at a time since filling the boat up entirely might have done more damage to the seams.'

Building a F-39 trimaran with Controlled Vacuum Infusion

How to convert from being a traditional woodworker to a high tech composite boat builder

For a long time I had wanted to build my "dreamboat" from scratch. Along with a growing experience of offshore sailing, the dreamboat went from a solid steady mono-hull to catamaran to trimaran and from comfortable cruiser to a cruiser/racer. At our annual Boat Show a strange ugly bird caught my eye. Parked along the jetty she was a half built and unpainted trimaran with one folding float (the other wasn't ready yet). It was a trimaran design that was started as a home-build project. The reason for showing it was to check the interest and the possibilities of a production version. Looking though screwed up eyes I saw the possibilities of this boat. With 35 ft. in length and suitable accommodation this design was worth further investigation.

Boat Licences, Registration, Safety, Insurance: Before Launching

Before you launch your boat, you need to buy a licence (or registration). This allows you to cruise around and to keep your boat on the waterways. Almost all of Britain's waterways are run by three main organisations, each of which issues its own licences and registrations. British Waterways runs almost all the canals, and rivers such as the Severn, Trent and Yorkshire Ouse. The Environment Agency runs the River Thames, the River Medway, and the rivers of East Anglia.Just like a road tax disc, you will need to provide evidence that your boat meets safety standards (the Boat Safety Scheme) and has third-party insurance before being issued with a licence.

The investment in time and materials is modest compared to the damage that occurs when a boat comes free of its mooring.

Sailguard Facilitates Tacking, Protects Sails

A long standing problem for sailors has been how to contend with the wear and tear of sails when exposed to contact with spars and rigging. Another problem is that the foot of the genoa often gets caught on the lifeline stanchions and has to be lifted. This brings about a shortened lifespan of the sails as well as an increased risk of tear.
Aronowitsch & Lyth AB now presents an inexpensive patented Swedish product. Sailgaurd is a split plastic wheel which allows it to be fitted on the lifelines, shrouds, stays and other parts of the rigging without removing the wire and may be snapped closed to ensure the wheel remains in place. The centre hole is 6,5 mm and can be widened by boring up to 9 mm when necessary.
