How can we make corporate social responsibility investments in sustainability projects more relevant, valuable and effective?

Tens of thousands of medium and large businesses, including almost every one of the Fortune 500 firms, spend significant amounts of time, efforts and money every year on CSR projects, a good portion of which are related to the environment. How can these projects be designed and implemented so that they add far more value and is a win-win for all stakeholders involved (including the environment, of course)?
