Moo: I’m sure you’ll appreciate, Xoo, that the term “sustainable fashion” sounds oxymoronic.

Xoo: I’m left wondering what you have to say about sustainable luxury

Moo: Surely there can’t be companies claiming to do that.

Xoo: The world will never cease to amaze us, Moo.

Moo: Amazed? I’m flabbergasted. But going back to sustainable fashion, what are your opinions about it, Xoo? Do you think it is just lot of hot air and greenwashing?

Xoo: Well, I wouldn’t be so pessimistic, Moo. Fashion doesn't necessarily mean wasteful nor it need to be against nature. As you will surely agree, there are a number of well-known products in the fashion industry known for their eco-friendliness.

Moo: But fashion is also about ever changing trends and the resulting frequent disposal of perfectly good clothes and accessories. I can’t imagine someone using a dress she bought ten years back and call herself fashionable.

Xoo: Perceptive, Moo, especially coming from you. Fashion is a complex industry with long and diverse supply chain and a dynamic end user segment. This is why I like the insight provided here that lays the emphasis on partnerships and even advocates an “office for partnerships”

Moo: You are thinking about various entities along the supply chain that can partner to make it sustainable, aren’t you?

Xoo: I’m thinking about partnerships not just upstream but downstream too. Imagine how a partnership between a fashion retailer and a garment retailer could benefit sustainability. Could such a partnership ensure that a garment need not be disposed of because it’s not out of fashion but it perhaps can be “remade” at the retail level so it comes back to fashion. The fashionable lady you empathized with can now use a  dress she brought ten years earlier and still don the latest in fashion.
