The reality of virtual power plants

Renewable Energy

A virtual power plant is a network of independent distributed energy resources (DER) utilizing a cloud-based control system to perform like a single large capacity energy source.

  • DER generation capacity could exceed 500 GW by 2028 worldwide.
  • Having customers with storage capabilities isn’t new, but the fact that storage provides a way to counter the demand and time of use charges could make some utilities thwart the growth of DERs..
  • Last year South Australia’s government, working with Tesla, announced a virtual power plant project that will include 50,000 houses.
