High upfront costs

While their low operating costs and high CoPs lead to long term savings and savings on carbon emissions, heat pumps have a large upfront cost.

For the cost of heat pumps to come down significantly, we would either need significant innovations around materials and components used in the heat pumps, or a dramatic increase in the market uptake of heat pumps which could lead to economies of scale, just as it did for technologies such as solar PV.
