Decarbonization Avenue : Enhancing thermal power plant efficiency

Challenges

Challenges with using low quality coal

In countries such as India, a substantial portion of the coal available in the country is of lower grades (bituminous, lignite or peat), and using these as feedstock could lead to poor operational performance of the power plant.

These grades have low calorific values and high ash content, and thus generating power from these will lead to much higher CO2 emissions than when using high quality coal.
