Construction and demolition waste as clinker raw material

Current clinker material for cement uses limestone and clay, the processing of which releases huge amounts of CO2 emissions. Use of limestone also has processing challenges - excess free lime results in undesirable effects such as volume expansion, increased setting time or reduced strength.

With construction and demolition waste being another challenge for the construction sector, cement companies are exploring circular material options. Use of construction and demolition waste as a raw material for concrete is a viable option owing to their properties. It also does not affect clinker properties with excess free lime content, while also removing environmental challenges associated.
