Synthesis routes specifically tailored for total biomass valorization at biorefineries

Plant biomass is a rich renewable resource comprising constituents that can be converted into high-value-added products, including chemicals, biofuels and advanced materials.

The concept of “whole crop biorefineries” has emerged in order to accomplish this. While emerging technologies and processes can enable valorization of many portions of a biomass, some amount of customization and tailoring of these technologies is needed to suit specific combinations of biomass feedstock used at biorefineries in different regions.

A well designed customization and optimization of these technologies can significantly enhance value recovery and profitability of biorefineries worldwide.
