Decarbonization Avenue : Biorefinery

Innovation Insights

Production of nutraceuticals and probiotics from biorefineries

Sustainable transformation of biomass into a wide range of valuable chemicals, fuels, and materials is the eventual goal of a biorefinery. In recent times, biorefineries are also attempting to integrate production of nutraceuticals related products as part of their overall product portfolio.

Biomass such as macro- and microalgae provide attractive feedstock for making valuable nutrients. Many strains and species of algae for instance are good sources of vitamins, minerals, lipids, proteins and pigments.

Including nutraceuticals as part of the product portfolio significantly enhances profitability and decreases risks for biorefineries.
