Coal based power plants typically need to operate at constant pressures and temperatures for high efficiencies. Integration of renewables into the grid has recently resulted in such plants having to operate in a relatively flexible manner, resulting in lower efficiencies.
Technologies and systems that can enable coal power plants to operate at higher efficiencies under such flexible demand regimes could have a positive impact on CO2 emissions reduction from these plants over the next few decades.
