Microalgae provide very high biomass yields per unit area compared to terrestrial plants. This also implies that their uptake of CO2 could be significant during their growth stages. The resulting microalgal biomass could become the feedstock for fuel, animal feed, biopolymers etc. This is thus a unique concept that has the potential to upgrade biogas cost effectively to RNG while at the same time also produce a valuable feedstock in the process.
This principle is used in the construction of a microalgae-based CO2 reduction technique for biogas in which the biogas is fed for upgradation into the region where the microalgae are cultivated.
