Innovations in biogas feedstock pre-processing

Pre-treatment or pre-processing is the preliminary removal of contaminants in the feedstock to enable efficient processing by the digester. Many contaminants could be present in a feedstock such as chemicals which could inhibit microbes, physical problems such as blocking or foaming. In some cases, the structure of feedstock could be a problem making it inaccessible to microbes and their enzymes. Thus pre-treatment plays a major role in determining operational and conversion efficiency of the process.

It is to be noted that in the case of agro waste, additional cost would be associated with pre-treatment owing to their complex structure and many research efforts are going on to minimize the same.
