Laws and mandates that ban organic waste from going into landfills

Safe disposal of organic waste is a huge challenge in today’s scenario. It is estimated that all regions generate about 50 percent or more organic waste, on average. Most of the waste is dumped in landfills, where it undergoes anaerobic decomposition generating methane which is left in the atmosphere causing global warming.

It is to be noted that methane is 25 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. However, this methane is a valuable product as a fuel and can be captured under the same conditions in a closed environment called anaerobic digester. In order to minimize the disposal of organic waste, policies play a major role. This could in turn enhance adoption of sustainable fuels.
