A new type of cement, carbonatable calcium silicate cement (CCSC), has a chemistry and functionality that allows it to have a significantly reduced CO2 footprint compared to Portland cement.
CCSC comprising low-lime calcium silicate minerals such as wollastonite, can be made in conventional cement kilns using common raw materials (limestone and silica) and are no more expensive to make than ordinary Portland cement clinker; in fact, energy costs and CO2 emissions are lower due to lower limestone contents in the kiln feed.
