How can we better maintain rural community solar power plants?

Post by admin »

A Dec 2021 news report pointed out how an ambitious rooftop solar power project in the Indian state of Bihar had become dysfunctional and had in fact become a cattle shed.

What was supposed to become a pioneering rural microgrid has become a cattle shed and a storage location for cattle feed.

The main reason - lack of maintenance - is a critical factor that is often ignored by policy makers and industries when planning for rural microgrids, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries.

While solar power plants may not require much maintenance or replacements, batteries do. And in this case, lack of battery maintenance and replacement seem to be the key reasons for the plant becoming defunct.

Maintenance & replacement of batteries has plagued many offgrid and microgrid installations in countries like India. What are the best ways to remediate this situation?
