Decarbonization Avenue : Concentrated Solar Power

Challenges

Use of hazardous materials

CSP systems employ several hazardous materials such as organics, thermal oils, molten-salts, hydraulic fluids, coolants and lubricants, which may pose spill risks. Especially the organic Biphenyl/Diphenyl oxide pair used in CSP systems is highly toxic, which has potential to catch fire and can also contaminate soils leading to environmental problems.
