Decarbonization Avenue : Enhancing thermal power plant efficiency

Challenges

Long lifespan of old coal plants

New generation coal power plants incorporate technologies that make them significantly more efficient (and thus less CO2 emissions) than old coal power plants. However, replacing old coal power plants with new ones is not easy.

Many thermal power plants can last over 30 years, and perhaps even 50 years or longer. This long lifespan makes it difficult for stakeholders to shut down old plants and invest in new plants.
