Liquefaction of methane (LNG) is done mainly to increase the energy density, and make transport and use more flexible. This flexibility has influenced the world market demand for LNG, whose production and use have seen steady increase in the last few years.
RNG can also find use in its liquid form (called liquid biomethane), but its production characteristics are quite different from those for fossil LNG. Fossil LNG market processing and markets at large scale on the global market, whereas the liquid biomethane market is by nature comparatively on very small scales, challenging the technologies and the economy of scale. This is where innovative policies and business models, such as the concept of blending liquid biomethane with fossil LNG, could make a difference and make it practical for liquid biomethane to be used in the current LNG infrastructure.
