Modular design, or modularity in design, is a design principle that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules (such as modular process skids), which can be independently created, modified, replaced, or exchanged with other modules or between different systems.
Modularity of a biogas plant is essential to ease the implementation of the plant, scale up and maintenance of key components. It also reduces the costs involved and resource requirements. As the potential of modular design has been proven in many industrial equipment, the same could also be implemented for anaerobic digesters.
Modularity in biogas digesters also enables them to be used in a distributed manner, and close to or at the source where the waste is generated.
